Business Breakfast Bath: The Future of Energy Systems

  • Pure Planet The Square, Cramer House, Lower Bristol Rd Bath BA2 3BH (map)

The Future Economy Network is thrilled to announce we will be co-hosting this event with our subscriber Pure Planet, in their beautiful new Bath offices! We welcome representatives from Pure Planet, the University of Bath & Bevan Brittan LLP to discuss the future of energy systems.

Steven Day, Co-Founder, Pure Planet will be discussing how go-green consumers will lead the shape of energy in Britain. The rise of renewable generation is finally being matched by  an increasing consumer demand for clean, affordable renewable electricity supply for homes. Steven discusses how going green is the new normal - and its impact on future systems.

Dr Rick Lupton, Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, University of Bath, his presentation aims to give a whole-systems view of the energy system. This lets us see what's big and what's small in current greenhouse gas emissions and energy use patterns, and where the big opportunities for improvement lie. One thing that's big is the energy used to make carbon-intensive materials and he will highlight how Resource Efficiency could reduce demands for this energy in future. He will introduce how at the University of Bath we are working to make better data available on how we currently use energy and resources, to help businesses find opportunities to use resources more efficiently and profitably.

Nathan Bradberry, Partner at Bevan Brittan LLP will present on drivers for heat networks in the UK, the challenges and opportunities to help achieve a transition to a low carbon economy. Nathan will discuss current Government policy / investment and the regulatory landscape governing heat networks.

Steven Day, Co-Founder, Pure Planet

Pure Planet co-founder Steven Day has a simple goal — to make Britain 100% renewably powered within his lifetime. He founded Pure Planet to do just that. Before that, he was part of the team that launched Virgin Mobile in the UK, before going onto to run Orange, T-Mobile and EE. Using digital innovation and artificial intelligence, he's part of the driving force that's shaking up the energy industry.

Dr Rick Lupton, Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, University of Bath

Rick's work focuses on understanding dynamic systems, ranging in scale from the behaviour of wind turbine blades to global production and consumption of steel, using modelling, data analysis, Bayesian inference and data visualisation. He is particularly interested in the role physical resources play in driving carbon emissions and other environmental impacts, and using data science to identify opportunities to use materials more efficiently. Dr Lupton joined the University of Bath in 2019, having previously worked at the University of Cambridge and at GL Garrad Hassan in Bristol.

Nathan Bradberry, Partner, Bevan Brittan LLP and leads on Energy Infrastructure work. He is part of a team of dedicated energy lawyers that specialise in energy efficiency and energy performance contracting working on projects ranging from more straight-forward installation of energy generation equipment, operation and maintenance agreements, guaranteed saving models through to more substantial procurements of heat networks and district energy schemes. Bevan Brittan has market leading expertise in the delivery of heat networks and advised on 5 out of the 9 projects that received Government investment as part of the pilot funding round of the Heat Networks Investment Project (HNIP). The team has 360 degree experience of advising all parties that may be involved in a heat network or energy efficiency project including developers, local authorities, housing associations, Universities, funders/investors, energy generators, infrastructure contractors/suppliers etc.
