James will be explaining the context of First Group's local bus service operation in Bath and the surrounding area, how they have seen consistent growth in ridership since 2013, how congestion and delay is their greatest enemy and how they are adapting to the upcoming Clean Air Zone in the city.

James Freeman, Managing Director, First West of England Ltd
James is a Bath resident (born and brought up in the city) who is Managing Director of First West of England Ltd, which runs many of the buses in Bath and across the West of England including parts of West Wiltshire and North Somerset.
James started work in 1974 as a bus conductor. He is a history graduate of Southampton University and has been in the bus industry ever since. By 2007 he was CEO of municipally-owned Reading Buses. He moved to his present role in 2014.
Clean air is now a vital problem in our cities and James has been interested in alternative propulsion systems and fuels since the 1990s. His company is now introducing a fleet of bio-methane fuelled buses into nearby Bristol, where there will be a fleet of some 99 buses in service by April 2020.
Alex Earl, UK Country Manager, Alfen
Alex has been working in the electric vehicle (EV) sector for over 8 years. Since 2015 he has been the UK Country Manager for Alfen, a market-leading manufacturer of smart EV charge points and large-scale battery storage systems, setting up Alfen’s business from scratch from its UK base in Bristol. Driven by his passion for sustainability and energy, Alex moved into the renewable sector in 2009, working for a not-for-profit organisation supporting solar businesses in Africa. He then moved to work for The New Motion in 2011 helping to build it into one of the leading EV charge point operators in Europe, heading up their Product and Energy division. He drives a full electric vehicle and will try to convince you that you should too!
